A Russellville man died Sunday after an early-morning collision with another vehicle at the intersection of East Parkway Drive and North Greenwich Avenue. Witnesses estimate motorcyclist Matthew Taylor, 25, was traveling southbound on North Greenwich Avenue at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour shortly before 1 a.m. when he skidded through an intersection and struck the side of a 2005 Buick sedan.
According to witness statements taken from four men attending a party on East E Street near the scene, Taylor, who had been at the party drinking, witnesses stated, was showing his motorcycle to a group in attendance at the party when he started the bike, revved the engine, and told the group to “watch this.” He then drove the motorcycle approximately three blocks south on Greenwich Avenue before turning around and accelerating back past the house, witnesses said, after which he attempted to stop but “slid through the stop sign and struck the passenger side of the vehicle.”
Taylor was transported to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.
